Java is not distributed with Windows, and SVG is not supported by IE.
This is, what? 60% of the users that might be interested in
Openstreetmap (atm).
There are three things you need to to to make a street
1. create segments
2. create a way from these segments.
3. put a name on it
(4. adding other data)
Most people can create segments from GPS track logs with some help
from the satellite in the applet. That can't be done on the AJAX map
yet (perhaps when Nicks wonder full canvasy thing matures abit).
Instead if people can create streets by just clicking the big RED "Add
street/Information" button. This will get you a form where you can
enter data, this box will already be georefed by the bounding box of
the slippy map.
Sure you can add lots of wizz bang features SVG/VML/Canvas/AJAXy, but
just a bare bone thingy would do. If someone has the skills to write a
better thing then fine.
I'm just saying that most people have no way at all to contribute data.

My ass would be really sore if I had to make track logs form the back
of a pony. ;-)
