How about a key that selects the last created element?
I usually edit placing a lot of nodes approximately along the tracklog,
connect them with segments and while adding segments move a lot of the
nodes around to a better place, often adding some more nodes in the
process. Pressing an additional key every time I created a new node would
be very annoying.
Segments should not be automatically selected, I can't see any use for
that...
I believe that the most common use of JOSM is the creation of nodes and
segments, and not the creation of POI nodes. While it is good to simplify
adding POI nodes, it should not interfere with usability in the most
common case. Automatically selecting things is IMO a bad idea regarding
usability and GUI design.
