Uncreative as I am, I mixed and mashed the phantastic sources we have available and would like to share the results:

If you combine the free relief tiles (CC-BY-SA 3) wih jochen Topfs transparentized tiles, you get a beautiful topographic OSM map all under a CC license (even if its 2 versions of the same).

Have a look at:

(you might have to twiddle with the layer selection a bit, it's not very convenient).

Thanks to jochen for the transparent Proxy. I understand that this is not a permanent solution though :-).
