[OSM-dev] Shaded relief in OSM

This cartographer (BSc degree) thinks that it might well serve in 
creating an even better looking map. Indeed new problems appear when 
overlaying roads, text and so on.

Regarding the public domain. I have images in ecw and tiff available 
(that are well over 250Mb) for the whole earth that are really public 
domain, completely and without restrictions. I would love to donate 
these to some enthousiastic that is intending to get it into mapnik or OSM.
