Exactly. I don't see anything wrong with that. It is needed for a
routing software in order to say, "leave the motorway at junction no.7".
 It's a different question how that should be sensibly rendered on a
map. But that's a task for smart render engines to think about :-).

So what is wrong with using multiple nodes and then a renderer could
take all motorway nodes with the "ref=E41;junction_ref=7" and render a
single symbol for them.

That's what I was following. The proposal might not be perfect, but it's
better than nothing IMHO.
