[OSM-dev] running a local server

Hi,

I'm new to this list, so forgive me if this is a FAQ.

I want to run one, possibly two, websites using a slippy map. The area
covered by the slippy map is quite restricted (not necessarily by code,
but in relevance to the sites).

At the moment I'm testing by running against the tah.dev server. For
actual use (these aren't likely to be high volume sites, unless I'm very
lucky) I imagine that a local cache would be enough to take most of the
load off the server, since the hits will mostly be on a small group of
tiles. But I'm also thinking I might like to try working with adding
layers at some point, so it seems like a good idea to try running my own
server. But I can't work out if there's a standard/recommended way to do
that that works with the current data format. Can anyone point me to the
best wiki page/mail thread/svn directory for some guidance?

Thanks
Graham (marinheiro)
