Ah, you're probably missing the srtm_generate_hdr.sh file from
http://mpa.itc.it/rs/srtm/ then - takes the .hgt.zip files from NASA,
and outputs the necessary stuff for gdal_contour to work (uses the
filename to work out the projection information).
