There is a fully functional demo of the API with a copy of the latest planet at
openstreetmap.gryph.de (username frederik at remote.org, password fredfred). Do
not hesitate to use it if you want to see the new API in action and/or test
Merkaartor on it.

Zero chance? You can see the source code of the new API, you can take a look
at how JOSM implements the new API and you can even set up a server to test
Merkaartor on. Heck, you don't even have to do that yourself, you can use the
one at openstreetmap.gryph.de.
