If the roads and trails are under major revision, it might be worthwhile to
wait until those are complete (depending on their timeframe). The existing
TIGER roads may or may not be okay (depending how much editing has taken
place), but it would be nice to have an independent, updated data source to
confirm or correct existing data. I think the trail data would be worthwhile
in any case, though.
Also, Jaimie asked for what data you're requesting. Do you know what's
available? It's tempting to say "everything" but that might put a big burden
on your contact, and it's likely to include data that's not of interest to
OSM.
