Maplint & Validator-Plugin look interesting (I didn't know about them before). Are they based on top of the API or do they access xml-data directly?

Not at the moment. In fact it is not a very spectacular thing: There ist just one main script that calls the individual checks and results in a table containing all error records.

If you are interested in running the checks for yourself I can send you the files...
