Hi Folks,
I have been away for a few days and am trying to catch up with all of the
discussions about Google Summer of Code projects.
I think that I have seen discussions about:
- Integrating OSM with Waze (or developing the Waze client to work with
OSM)
- Developing an OSM based traffic information system.
- Better Printed output support.
- Development of OpenSatNav OSM based navigation system for Android.
- I think there have been more too...
Some of these projects are quite big, and I think that more than one person
is interested in working on them. For the traffic information idea, this
is definitely too big for one person to do as part of GSoC - would someone
like to put something on the Ideas page, showing potential ways of splitting
it into manageable sized projects please (I am thinking of API/database
server, mobile clients, web front end etc. etc.).
To try to avoid too many multiple applications for the same aspect of a big
project I would urge potential applicants to start to draft out their
proposals on our Wiki (
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2010/Student_Applications)
- this will help you to see what other people are suggesting, and possibly
propose complimentary projects. I would also refer you to our main GSoC'10
page<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2010#Potential_Student_Participants>where
we have included a suggested template for applications - please use
that template - it will make comparing the various applications much easier
for us!.
Note that the window for formal applications via the Google Web Site (
http://socghop.appspot.com/) starts on Monday 29th March and runs through
until Friday 09th April.
Please apply early as this will give us chance to comment on your proposal,
and allow you to revise it as necessary before the application deadline
closes.
I look forward to seeing all of your applications!
Regards
Graham.
PS: I am still keen to recruit as many potential mentors as possible as
this will help us match good applications to the most appropriate mentor -
please contact me if you are interested in helping as a mentor.
