One possibility would be to construct the position of the POI icons not 
in Mapnik but in osm2pgsql during the import. I recently hacked together 
a small patch [1] that allows you to add a centroid column during the 
import. You could use the value from this column for the point placement 
in your map style as well as for you gui app.
