http://planet.openstreetmap.org is the interface from the main DB to all kind
of data consuming services, including the renderers, Nominatim, Overpass API
and several others.

It has roughly the same importance than the main API and it is the place where
minute and other replication streams are distributed in an efficient way along
with the Planet.osm.

As this is the data hub with appropriate user interface for the technical
folks, I suggest rather not to bend it into something of minor importance like
an Export tab on a website, even if that one easily visible to newbies.

On the other hand, for somebody who is not yet familiar with the OSM data
format (XML, PBF or both), the planet.osm.org is unlikely to be useful, so
both are services with quite distinct audiences.

Cheers,

Roland
