Yes, this is what I do also. But it takes 10 minutes with a PBF planet. This consumes the advantage PBF has over compressed XML.

It seems, the file timestamp is the only feature the XML planet files provide but the PBF planet files lack.
And it seems osmconvert is presently the only tool which is able to write PBF files with a file timestamp.

However, the toolchains which create the planet.pbf (or extracts from it) do not use osmconvert; they use other tools which probably are much more suited for this purpose. For this reason I would like to encourage the developers of that tools to enhance their software accordingly. This would accelerate the file-based updates significantly.
