We usually don't provide mentoring before the main period of GSoC.
The application period is a time where you as a student should
proactively show that you can autonomously familiarize yourself
with a project and are motivated to start working on it.

Andy already mentioned our wiki page. Have a look at the project
list. Find a project that interest you and try to find out more
about the project. Familiarize yourself with using the software
and look into the code. If you haven't done yet, start mapping
in areas familiar to you, so you get a good idea about the workflow.
All this will help you when you afterwards get in touch with the
mentor of the project of your choice to discuss the detailed
requirements and issues of the project.
