Hi Hugo,
I use and contribute to Pl at ntNet and it is truly great and a marvellous
endeavour. A thank you to you for working on it! I am also a believer in
"the more the merrier" as a doctrine for OpenStreetMap.
I am however dubious about pushing observations into the OpenStreetMap
database, if my understanding is correct as to the intent.
Two reasons,
1) I contribute things like cultivated and wild plants in my garden and
nearby road verges along with geolocation for anyone interested in
looking at geographic spread. I don't think (purely personal view) that
is of 100% value to OpenStreetMap itself - i.e rather like the Wikipedia
notability criteria. At most, I'd have a filter for only trees.
2) As I recall from my usage, there are choices when it comes to
geolocation. One is to get a GPS fix, so in the sort of accuracy used by
OpenStreetMap. The other is to use a push pin - I wonder to what extent
folks deliberately make it less than precise for privacy reason. Just
speculating, but that would not be useful for OpenStreetMap. I've seen
some of the ?Corrine tree cover imports and they are generally terrible.
Could observations be restricted to GPS only?+
I am going to forward my response and your mail to Jerry Clough who is
both a very active OSMer and a biologist as I am not sure if he is on
this list. He might have some more authoritative thoughts ... but that
is up to him!
What might be nice (and perhaps useful!) would a plant observation layer
in OSM format that can be combined those interested. I think we at
OpenStreetMap may be missing an opportunity to incorporate scientific
and citizen science data into our ecosphere. The static natural world -
plants, geology and geomorphology - has some sort of role I'm sure.
