While you are correct, there is no formal connection, I say: so what?
I totally understand the foundation not wanting to get involved in individual disagreements, that doesn't absolve the foundation (or the community generally) from their responsibility to ensure that the community is as inclusive as possible.
I think that this question is independent of any particular dispute.
One of the overall problems with OSM communities is that you end up with a thousands of tiny areas of interest and while it's perfectly fine, maybe even desirable to have that kind of structure, it's in the best interest of the community, and of the map as a whole if there are norms and practices in place that prevent areas of interest from becoming exclusionary fiefdoms.
(And lest anyone jump to conclusions, I'm not saying that's what's happening here. I don't know what happened. The particular dispute is irrelevant to the larger question.)
