Hi Peter,
Thank you for that info, I have voted for your answer at SO )) I started
reading "Alternative Route Graphs in Road Networks" paper (my German is not
good for the second one, but I plan to give Google Translator a try).
I do not really mean this with 'alternative route'. Avoiding traffic
> jam should be done via updating the edge weights and just recalculate
> the route with this 'barriers' taken into account.

Yes, as I understand, this is a standard approach, but it is useful to find
a single route. My goal is to find alternative ones, even they are not
optimal considering current traffic situation. For example, if you your
navigation system tells you to turn around and select and alternative
(unusual) way, you may want to know why, and what current situation is
along other alternative ways.
For example, there are traffic reports on radio stations / TV, but they are
generic for whole city area. I would like to 'narrow' such reports to
current driver's route, including alternatives.

Yes, getting traffic data is another task, I know. I plan to receive such
data linked to OSM roads, even it will need some manual work. There already
are some services like that (reporting traffic situation to users), at
least in our city (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia), but they are not automated at
all (almost), and my goal is to make improvements in this area.
There are some sources of traffic information used by major map providers
(such as Yandex Maps in RU), but it's unlikely they will share such info.
Some other sources exists too, I'll use them if possible.
Thanks again,
Mike
