[GraphHopper] Regarding flags and tags

How should I handle storing the tags? Should I memorize them and their 
related flag value, then, when I try to classify the edge (my idea was 
to make a weighting that gives to certain kinds of ways a multiplicator 
to the distance, in order to prefer a certain kind of ways), compare the 
flags of the edge to those I saved?
