Dear Sir/Madam,
Hope everything goes well.
I am Junzhen Lou, a second-year master’s student studying computer science
at ETH Zurich and EPFL.
Although I have plenty of experiences focused primarily on cybersecurity
and data management systems, open-source projects remain novel and
interesting to me.
I am strongly motivated by the ethos of open-source, which emphasizes
transparency, diversity, and accessibility in software development.
Introduced by a close friend, I learned about this perfect opportunity,
GSoC 2023, and your organization.
Among all ideas posted online, I am most interested in* Landmark-based
navigation in Valhalla*.
This project instantly caught my eye, because I believe navigation based on
landmarks is much more user-friendly and promising.
Personally speaking, I am often confused by the existing navigation system
and get lost, especially in a foreign country.
If there is a navigation system that can tell me to “turn left at the
second red house”, I will definitely use it and recommend it to every
friend.
That is the reason why I am deeply attracted by this idea, and would love
to contribute to it.
I have experience in C++, Golang, and Python.
In 2022, using C++, I implemented a project regarding performance-critical
optimization of large-scale data valuation, and a lab of algorithms and
data structures.
I am also familiar with distributed systems and computing, security and
privacy.
These months I am working as a software engineer intern.

I will very much appreciate it if we can have a further discussion on this
project idea.
Thanks for your time, and looking forward to your reply!
Best regards,
Junzhen
