Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your message and the feedback. I’d like to clarify a few things
regarding the project to address your concerns and provide more context.
The project I mentioned involves utilizing data from the Polish Head Office
of Geodesy and Cartography to improve OSM data. Here’s a brief overview of
the project and its objectives:
The website allows users to download data packages with missing
addresses/buildings and add them to OSM using the JOSM tool.
You can find more details here: https://budynki.openstreetmap.org.pl/ and ht
tps://github.com/openstreetmap-polska/gugik2osm
Regarding your concerns:
- Approval by the Community: Data used in this project comes from Polish
Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography data, which are publicly
available and suitable for integration with OSM. The Polish OSM community
gave a consensus to launch the site and hence this project was launched.
- Scope of GSOC: We understand that GSoC projects focus on developing
software tools, not adding data directly to OSM. The goal of this project
is to create a new tool that will help process data from Polish Head Office
of Geodesy and Cartography, identify missing addresses/buildings and make
it easier to add them to OSM using JOSM. This is in line with GSoC's goal
of writing software. The actual data import will not be part of the GSoC
project itself, but rather the development of a tool for processing and
preparing data.
- Reuse and Sustainability: We fully agree that open-source projects
should be reusable and sustainable. The current platform allows users to
download missing addresses/buildings in a structured .osm format, ensuring
it can be reused for similar projects in the future. We are considering
starting fresh to ensure a more stable and maintainable platform.
Unfortunately several issues arose:
1. The minute-by-minute update functionality that checks for recent OSM
changes no longer works.
2. The reporting feature for incorrect addresses/buildings is currently
broken.
3. The tool responsible for executing scripts on the page is having
problems with its database connections and no longer works as expected.
I hope this clarifies the purpose of the project and how it fits within the
guidelines of GSoC.
Best regards,
Dawid Skalec
