Hello,
my name is Tim, I work as User:Kolossos in Wikipedia and Wikimedia
Commons at the cooperation with OpenStreetMap.
We have in Wikipedia tons of articles about historical events and
objects, so we are very interested. We can also bring many editors and
readers to this project.
With projects WIWOSM[1] and {{Attached_KML}}[2] we are already able to
include an specific overlay in the map for each article. But I believe
this is only the beginning, we need a specific editor and database for
historic or future data that are out of scope classical OSM. Editor and
database should base on existing OSM technology.
The question is what features we want to have in such an frontend
application:
*Time animations like mapstory.org
*Interactive description for each object
*Different Styling features
*Different background maps
*Interactive filtering, etc.
*Handling of fuzzy geometries
How to keep this application stable and secure?
To keep it at beginning easy we should start perhaps with simple
geometries? Collected data should be usable for one or more Wikipedia
article but also for other projects.
On the other side we have Wikimedia Commons which is in my eyes ideal
place for scans from old maps. We need there a system to rectify this
maps and build a nice viewer (The tiles should comes later directly from
our production servers).
Greetings Tim
