Hi Noel, Guilherme,

Those state and country lines you see & places are actually from Natural
Earth Data <https://www.naturalearthdata.com/> & they're aren't really
supposed to be there... that's one of the items that needs to be cleaned
up. OSM actually uses Natural Earth Data as a substitute for its own data
when you're zoomed further out... it's another item we'll have to adjust &
work around, as there's no Historical Version of Natural Earth (although
I'm trying to collect or create shape files of old boundaries here
<https://github.com/OpenHistoricalMap/data>.)

Natural Earth is a bit of a GIS & Internet treasure due to its
completeness, consistency, and also its license, which is public domain
<https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/>.

But... back to OHM licensing. I've been an advocate of cc0 licensing by
default, item-level licensing for exceptions, and of not importing OSM
data* at scale into OHM. That said, I'm not the only one involved in this
project. I'd love to get more people involved. Perhaps we need a licensing
committee to put together some policies & practices? I'd support anyone
taking the lead on that. : )

Which reminds me: we'll restart our regular meeting schedule & I'm also
thinking of a way to have ongoing async discussions on topics like these.
Maybe some more slack rooms? I figure we'll just add a few more until
OSM-US kick us out?

Last: bug filing! As soon as we get the github organizations squared away
and code moved to where it should be, we'll post a link for posting bugs
that you come across.

Thanks,
Jeff

* Quick observations about importing OSM data:
- OSM as an organization and legal entity is very protective of its data &
should be!
- The OSM license is designed to be viral, literally to infect the entire
OHM database, should we import too much OSM data into OHM
- If this happens, we won't be able to freely export OHM data & we'll run
into similar issues OSM has with its licensing, which are both subtle and
impactful
- That all said, I'd love to figure out a way to have as much OSM data as
possible in OHM. One way might be to invite authors of OSM data to
recontribute their data to OHM...
- Bottom line: we need more heads wrapped around this issue than just mine!
