[HOT] Global Roads Open Data Set in beta

Nicolas and I are members of the gROADS working group, but aren't particularly active. I asked the WG lead about the licensing.

Well, there are gray areas, and we’re hoping not to run into any major issues with the input data. The problem is that much of the data just does not come with adequate documentation to assess redistribution rights and the like. Where there were clear licenses/restrictions, we were explicit in the documentation here:http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/downloads/docs/groads/groadsv1_documentation.pdf
 
But that was only for data for which there were clear licenses or restrictions. Here we explicitly mention the OSM data inputs as being ODBL.
 
The other issue is that not all the data are really very high quality. The best data are probably for Kenya, all GPSed, and very thoroughly cleaned by one of our staff. But otherwise it’s a mix of data with different spatial accuracies an completeness. I could share with you the RMSEs for data sets that were added to the baseline created by ITOS. That would give you a general sense of the spatial accuracy.
