My experience in Mali (only a few weeks' worth) has all been with 
unpaved roads. Most of them disappear into the merest traces at some 
point due either to drifting sand or flood deposits. I look for two ruts 
rather than one to confirm that the way is not just a footway. Under 
such circumstances, trying to classify into a hierarchy seems to be an 
impossible ideal.
