Sure. I'll use the Lincoln National Forest as an example (it's the one I've 
been playing with the most, and the one I've the most GPS tracks).

The USFS has shapefiles for trail and forest road data:

I forgot to mention that for many of New Mexico's National Forests (Lincoln 
included), they are divided into "ranger" districts that are typically 
physically separated. I plan on doing imports of each ranger district 
separately to minimize the amount of data uploaded and to divide imports into 
distinct changesets.

This OSM file I've not done any editing; it's not split into ranger districts, 
nor are ways simplified, but you can load it up and get an idea of the import.
