[Imports] Import Assistance

It looks like you're proposing a method that will be modifying existing
data. There is nothing wrong with this and it's the method I'm working on
for a similar import but one huge is reviewing the output. With a normal
import you can just open up the intended upload .osm file with JOSM and
select random objects to review them as well as generate some tagging
statistics.

Because you're also writing new tools to handle the data instead of using
existing ones this means that you'll want to do extra verification that all
the logic in your code is tested. As I'm doing the exact same stuff I can
assure you that it is a pain.

I look forwards to reviewing what you produce, because I'm sure the review
will be interesting.

Subject: [Imports] Import Assistance

Hi,

I'm working on an import for some UK postcodes. The import has been
discussed at length on the GB-Talk mailing list, with no strong
objections[1], and I have also created an import project page describing the
process [2]. The scripts etc. are not up there yet, I'm still finalising
them at the moment and once done they'll be up there with some sample data.

I would appreciate some feedback on what I've done so far and also some
advice on how to proceed, as I am planning on running the batch towards the
end of this month.

Since this is the first time I have tackled a bulk import, I need some
assistance on a couple of things

Firstly, how to actually execute the import, I can generate whatever XML or
other output that is required, but I need some advice as to what it should
contain, how best to batch it up, and what the best tool to use to upload it
is etc.

Secondly what sort of QA is required. I can do some manual random QAing,
and also comparing against what is already tagged in OSM. Not sure what
else is possible/required.

Thanks,

Aidan
