As i have adviced by Mikel (Email 2) and Rob Nickerson that i should give the data so that it would be easy to find solution for the imports: here is the link for the data i want to import into the OSM. As i have said in my previous mails, the data i want to upload has been licensed from the Government of Tanzania and i thought it would be useful with the other people to use it especially when they are uploaded in OSM. I have also attached the license for the release of the Data into the OSM from the Government.

JOSM doesn't read shapefiles natively. Instead, you need the OpenData plugin to open shapefiles.

Also, I don't remember what import this is for, but isn't there any processing to do first? (tagging, etc.). Also, I think it's generally preferred to either have an .osm or .osc (OsmChange file) that is uploaded from instead of a shapefile.

Hello,

Can anyone help me? I have been trying to use JOSM (Java Open Street Map) to upload data in Shapefile form into the OSM but it doesn't read the shapefiles, Thanks.

Hi Rob,

This is why I wrote the email to the Import to let the Community understand what I want to do.

With this data, I have the license to upload them here in my country and because its important to be used with other people in my country thats why I want to upload them into the Open Street Map.

Any advice what I should do next?

Thanks for replying.

Regards,

Msilikale.

See Saikrishna's reply on the list for how to open ShapeFiles in JOSM. The
plug in works best with small files.

Looking back in the email archive, it looks like this is a building import
for Dar es salaam [1]. Am I right? If so, then I would repeat the advice
that you import small sections at a time (a neighbourhood you know well
would be a good starting point). As there are already some buildings in
OpenStreetMap for this city, then you need to be careful not to create
duplicates. Mikel's email [2] is spot on.

If you've taken this all into consideration and are struggling with JOSM,
then why not put the ShapeFile up online somewhere (e.g. dropbox) and have
someone help split it into smaller files for you.

Regards,
Rob
