Since the first mention on this list, this data source has morphed a bit.
Where I thought the data was limited to Canada and USA, I have learned
that data may come from drivers and fleets that are global. That's
kind of cool.
My initial suspicion that drivers and their fleet managers would not
game the data appears to hold. The anomalous data I saw "121" was not
a gaming of a 120 km/h speed limit, but an approximation of a 75 MPH
speed limit.
There is only weak motivation for drivers and fleet managers to adjust
speed limits down, so we might not get corrections by this method if a
speed limit is legitimately reduced.
The fleet managers currently have no way to communicate their vehicle
type. That is, they might submit a maxspeed:hgv, (or other
conditional) but they won't be able to communicate that to us. There
is a ticket to add that information in future, in the data publisher
software. I don't know an ETA.
Questions:
1) I think that these speed limit submissions might be suitable for a
MapRoulette challenge, as long as users limit their challenges to
their local area, so they may apply some local knowledge. Does that
sound good to you?
2) Do you have comments after reviewing the extent of the data shown
in this link from several weeks ago?
