It's definitely worth checking if there are mappers in Hawaii and how to
contact them. A static data import without people on the ground who
actually work with is nice to look at, but has is only a fraction of the
value compared to one that is actively embraced, checked, improved by
local mappers with knowledge of the place.

I don't have any Hawaii contacts but places to check (apart from the
lists which you have already looked at) might be the forum at
forum.openstreetmap.org, and in some areas OSMers even organise around a
facebook group. Or browse to http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/oooc to get
an idea of where mappers are on Hawaii. If you could gather a few of
these people to advise and help you with an import, that would certainly
be worth the effort. They might even buy you a beer ;)
