generally, in areas with narrow streets and irregular (no right angles)
building shapes, what you need is:
- aerial imagery sufficient to recognize roughly the building shape (or
alternatively much more time and patience and a measuring tool and
expertise how to do it).
- surveys to verify the results (consumer gps mostly useless, I recommend
field papers)
- patience and a lot of work
even more so when there are a lot of covered passages
(tunnel=building_passage), as it is common in some of these areas.
"extrusion" is mostly useless in these settings because all it resolves are
right angles. Although in the arab world these situations are more common
(and often more extreme), you can also find similar situations (on a
smaller scale) in historic European towns and villages (and likely in other
regions with a pre-industrialization urban structure).
Cheers,
Martin
