How about capturing some of the data in the FEATURECOD field? Here's
the values present:

General
Government
Education
Recreation
Commercial
Hotel/Motel
Religious
Community Center
Medical
Industrial
Airport
Cultural/Heritage
(null)

It seems most residential buildings are listed as General, but mapping
at least "Commercial" to building=commercial and "Government" to
building=public seems safe enough. I guess a couple of others would
make sense too (like Community Center implying
"amenity=community_centre").

The data also has several other metadata fields like height and roof
type, but they appear to be poorly determined or sparsely populated.
