"So 4 days after most people interested in imports ever heard about it you are ready to go?"
Who checks his mails only every 4 days? Don't people check them out every day?
"You ask the question on the main communication channel for imports (disregarding imports-us) whether its OK to start and over on Slack in the local-florida channel in the single thread about the issue started now 8 days ago you state that you already started. Seriously?"
Yes, seriously! Whats the problem? I contacted the local community on slack. I even wrote to several people who actively edit in FL (including maxlasersquad) via the osm.org messaging feature with details about the plan and only got positive feedback. (Somehow I missed you when I was looking for active people in FL, sorry.) I replied to everything, here and on Slack. I asked if there were still problems. No one replied. The example files i posted were downloaded more than 60 times, one day after i shared them here. No one complained about the data quality. Yes, i could have waited longer. However, if there would have been any open questions, you would have had to ask them, as soon as possible and not in two weeks. You didn't, no one didn't.
"You didn't address any of my concerns and I have. I have lived in FL my whole life, have put massive amounts of effort into OSM in this state over the past 11+ years, etc, etc."
I respect that you live there and your work! And i addressed your concerns. But there just wasn't that much to reply to. In a nutshell, you said: "Better not, i have a bad feedling, so much can go wrong. Use it as a guide." (=don't import anything, trace everything manually) You didn't point to specific problems, e.g. "This should be tagged as this and not as this" or "Here is everything outdated" or something like this. Or did i miss something?
"It took me a few minutes, but all I know about you is you are https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Hiausirg and you have been mapping in OSM since 3/4/2021. I gather you are based in Europe based on the times you are communicating. Red flag for a massive import in another country."
Would surprise me if this takes more than two minutes, I use that exact name here and on Slack. Yes, i'm in europe, but i've been in FL, multiple times.
"You dismissed maxolasersquad as "I don't think it's a good idea to give people who add 5 POIS in their city once a month such a responsibility, just because they're locals." You obviously don't know who he is either. Very long time contributor to massive amounts of edits in Florida - way more than a local adding a few pois a month."
Come on, i wrote "maxolasersquad wants to do the import around his area, Tallahassee - i don't have a problem with that, he has the data. I don't know if there are any other people who want to/can do uploads like that. I don't think..." It's obvious that when I said "5 poi/month" mappers, I didn't mean him. When i looked for people who actively edit in FL, see above, most FL edits came from people who edit very rarely or who edit all over the world and randomly made an edit in FL.
"Well, my first thought is OK, a few breezy comments and you're done? I have no idea what your background is, if you are a GIS professional or not, etc, but there are a lot of land use vs land cover issues and decisions to make and many times its locally / regionally oriented. And there's a lot of issues with the cross-walking codes between the land cover and OSM tags, etc. You addresses some of those, but your comments mostly appear to be, "well I think its good, so..." And now at day 7 after the initial announcement you found something great - I'm starting now."
I'm definitely not a professional, i'm an amateur OSM mapper - like most other people here. Also, i didn't address "some", i addressed all, and mostly, i used the suggested changes.
"Did you address Frederik Ramm's concerns? Do you know who he is and his background?"
Yes, i did. He is an long-term mapper, member of the data working group and woodpeck on OSM, if I am not mistaken.
"Like I said in my initial comment, I've got a lot of thoughts on this, there's lots of issues and I'm willing to help (as are many others), but if you just started blanketing the state with this import after a few days of input and most of your responses to questions and issues are dismissive then I'm going to do all I can to help block this and I would imagine many others will step up and do the same. Again, this is not how imports are supposed to be run. Here are the guidelines:"
It's nice if you got lots of throughts. But i can't read your mind, so you have to share these. (This sounds as i think you're dumb, but it isn't mean't like that.) If you (or anyone else) wants to help, no problem! Say which area you are intrested in and i send you the data. You can upload it, ignore it, use it as guide, move the file into the recycling bin, or whatever, the area is then "yours". maxolasersquad asked fo the data around Tallahasse, and he has it now. No need to link the import guideline, i know these, and i followed them (described above).
"This needs to stop until further review / discussion and probably revert what has been done so far. Way too much has already been imported to stop a major mess from subsequent edits even in this rural area." Yeah of course. Revert, revert, revert. Then show me a few areas where there is now a "major mess". But no, better revert quickly, that's easier. (if it shouldn't be clear: I stopped)
Greetings
