Is this really true given the size that the yellow rectangle will have
for any reasonable bounding box size? Actually I don't think so - as
you'll only get a yellow dot somewhere (you can guess it might be
southern germany) or you'll only have a yellow retangle on a
green/greyish area (where you have no idea where you actually are) -
both won't help a lot to get a good idea about your "current position".
I still see the current "map" tab as nice to look at but in effect
completely useless ...
I guess the smc would be *much more* helpful here.

Is this really a problem? If you are going to download an area you
usually will have to guess the area to work with anyway.

Or simply, show a yellow rectangle only for the currently selected area
given from a different tab and remove this rectangle as soon as the smc
display is zoomed/moved.
However, the current implementation really needs an improvement in this
regard ...
