Well I know that people have said they use it for that purpose, who am I
to judge whether that's true ;-)

Which is alright - the question is not "how much of the black forest is
in my bounding box" but "have I mixed up lat and lon again" ;-)

I am not disputing that (provided the tile server is in working
condition, and the smc plugin actually reacts to data entered on another
tab).

Yes but if you know that you won't e.g. get the full Karlsruhe area
because of the node limit then you might very well want to download
something that is a bit higher than wide, instead of being forced to use
the aspect ratio displayed.

I still maintain that it would be useful to be able to select the area
on the slippy map.
