Sounds reasonable to change. However, I know there are at least some
users with their own styles.

This should not be buried in the preferences, but somewhere in the menu
or toolbar.

It really should be a link to
svn.openstreetmap.org\applications\share\map-icons\classic.small
As I've recently done some changes to elemstyles.xml we should take care
not to loose those changes while tweaking with the styles ...
