[josm-dev] add segment/join node to segment

I've downloaded the latest JOSM now and I'm a little stumped by the 
removal of the "add segment" tool. I assume that the automatic addition 
of segments when placing nodes and the tool "Join a node into the 
nearest way segments" should be used, but I can't.

First of all: how do I draw multiple nodes without getting a segment 
between them? I can't accept the the current way to add single nodes is 
"add node, add node, remove automatically created segment".

Second: how do I add segments between two nodes? For example when I want 
to join two separate ways together, I want to draw a segment. Now I have 
to use "Join a node into the nearest way segments" but that doesn't work 
properly with highways where the nearest segment is the opposite way 
where you *don't* want to join to.

I also am not clear when a segment is automatically added when placing a 
node. It seems rather random to me.
You can't select a way and then press N to start adding nodes, it just 
doesn't do anything.

Can someone clarify this for me?
For now: this JOSM is unworkable for me. I'm going back to my "last latest".
