I can and you can as well, IMHO. It takes some time to (re-)learn but
the new way is a lot faster (and easier - believe me) once you get used
to it.
One important note: Have a look at the statusbar (the one at the
bottom), which gives you valuable hints about the keys (depending on the
mode your in) ...

Select the first point, and *add* the second node - a segment will
appear. The second node won't be a new node, as usual in the "new"
modeless JOSM.
