Or even better: add a context menu, which is probably a far better place 
for the things "you don't need all the time".

I don't have a middle mouse button on my notebook's touchpad (and I'm 
pretty certain that I'm not alone with this), so everytime I need to do 
some "advanced cleanup" in JOSM, I have to take my external mouse - the 
only tool I know that requires this.

Well, and I don't want to put my usability related comments about the 
"hold the Ctrl button while pressing the middle mouse button" on a 
public list ;-)
