I have to agree with Frederik, leaving WMS plugin enabled for the 
Mercator projection is asking for trouble. Most people don't know much 
about projections and problems with raster data and they will happily go 
using Landsat images for tracing land features - I know I did until I 
switched the view to EPSG projection half an hour ago and now I find all 
of the things I entered offseted compared to the Landsat image.
I think the first priority of JOSM is to enable people to enter 
information accurately. If that means using EPSG projection, so be it.
