I perfectly understand your reasoning and I agree in comparing "nice
looking circles" in contrast to "accurate data" I'm pretty sure accuracy
is *much* more important.
So unless someone comes up with a pretty good reason to use Mercator
that outweights this, I tend to set the JOSM default back to EPSG ...
