This would seem to be the best solution. In inkscape the "modify node"
tool only works on selected objects,so you need two clicks. There's is
a drag tool that doesn't require selection first though.

Certainly I would prefer it if you could only accedently edit objects
which were selected, since you then have feedback about what you're
editting. But I can imagine other people would disagree..
