As others have likely already pointed out, any public suggestion that we 
should (or would, or could) use Google Sat images, or, even worse, 
Google maps to complete our data is dangerous and may tarnish our 
reputation because that falls outside Google's terms of use.

HOWEVER, having a little script like yours translate between a "Google 
tiles" server and a client looking for WMS input is a great addition to 
our palette of tools. There are many GIS applications out there that 
could easily use OSM as a backdrop if it were availalbe in WMS form. 
While mapnik reputedly is able to serve WMS data, we don't have the 
server capacity to make an OSM WMS server availalbe. So your script, 
slightly changed to load OSM tiles instead of Google's, would be a good 
idea to further spread the use of OSM!
