If you already have a way or end node of a way selected, that would 
extend the way to the new node. If all you want is a new node in an 
existing way, you need to SHIFT+CLICK. As SHIFT+CLICK always works 
whether or not anything is selected, it is best to get into the habit of 
using that IMO.
