I was a bit mistaken, press "A" or "N" and then click the segment.

You don't need to have a segment selected. JOSM always adds the node to the 
nearby segment if you click close enough.

SHIFT+CLICK does not do much special. Ok, it does allow you to add multiple 
nodes without having JOSM making a segment between it, but as soon as you 
release the shift, JOSM wants to add a segment to the last node. Which, in a lot 
of circumstances, is a very anoying habit (adding amenities, adding nodes to a 
segment).

What JOSM really needs is a "add node and do not continue to make a segment" 
option. The shift+click would be perfect, were it not that it does add the 
segment to the last node you added.
