Oops, then the brakes in my car are broken, too. They only work as long 
as I press the brake pedal...

Being in add mode with a node selected says to add a way at this node. 
Adding Alt tells JOSM not to try to connect to an existing way. Adding 
Shift says to ignore the selection. Nothing more, nothing less.
