I'm not sure this is a good idea, or put another way - it would be good 
to have a slippy map display capacity in WMS quality, but the slippy map 
plugin is intended more as a kind of "tiles at home helper", showing the 
tile boundaries and allowing you to request and display tile metadata or 
  request tile updates. As such, it is supposed to actually expose tile 
details - whereas the WMS layer is expected to hide them in order to 
provide a seamless background.

Perhaps we should have a slippy map display layer in the WMS plugin (and 
subsequently rename it "background image plugin"), and leave the grid 
and tile status/update stuff in the existing slippy map plugin (and 
rename it "tiles at home plugin" or so).
