Could you make a bugreport containing the important parts of that 
discussion? This is no short-term project, so we should take care the 
ideas aren't lost.

And when you are on the mockups: How would you place the sign? One 
suggestion would be following:

Take last way-segment of the from way before the via point, get it's 
orientation and draw the sign xx pixels away from via/way. I think 
rotating is not the problem. We can make signs for 8 directions, that 
should be precise enough.
