I think that integrating the Slippy Map Chooser was also on Dirk's 
agenda so please check with him.

I don't think the world chooser hurts but of course you're right in that 
it is of very limited use. The only sensible use is if you select a 
download area by other means, e.g. input an OSM URL or coordinates, then 
switching to the world chooser will tell you whereabouts on the planet 
that area is. Something that the Slippy Map Chooser does too, but the 
tile server might just be offline or broken...

Do you think it would be possible to take the world image that is used 
by the world chooser and put it as a sort of "fallback layer" into the 
Slippy Map downloader, so that if it doesn't get tiles from the server 
for any reason, it switches to the low-res data from the world file? 
That would neatly combine the advantages of both and make the world 
chooser obsolete.
