sounds great, that's what I intended when I wrote the slippy map  
chooser.

That is indeed possible. Jan Peter Stotz extracted the displaying code  
from slippy map chooser and wrote "jmapviewer". In fact slippy map  
chooser now uses his lib to display the slippy map.
The tile access is abstracted so one could easily write a data source  
supporting one image as source.

Maybe one could use an image with a higher resolution from:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/BlueMarble/BlueMarble_monthlies.php

I could do that if no one else wants to. But it would take some time...
